Meal Planning*

Making the most of your veggie box…
1. Remove produce from your box and sort into piles, e.g. potatoes, tomatoes, etc., counting how many of each fruit/veg you have as you go.

2. Next, distribute your produce across the week. You can do this by sorting into piles for each day or by using a sheet of paper with a table showing the days and meals of the week ahead (mealplanner1)

3. Base meals early in the week around the fruit and veg that tend to perish quickly. These include berries, stone fruits, melons, ripe bananas, herbs, mushrooms, green beans and leafy veg.

4. Use fruit and veg with a longer shelf life towards the end of the week. These generally include apples, green bananas, citrus fruits, root vegetables, capsicums, cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, zucchinis and pumpkins.

5. Get out your recipe books for inspiration or use Google to find new recipes. Check out websites such as www.lovefoodhatewaste.com or www.recipematcher.com which will suggest recipes based on ingredients you’ve got available.

6. Don’t be afraid to substitute recipe ingredients for similar ingredients – this will reduce the need for buying extra food and keep your weekly spending down.

Quick tips to make your veggies last longer!
• Store melons sliced in airtight containers in the fridge. Remove the seeds and membrane of rockmelons and honeydew as these parts tend to go mouldy first.
• Keep herbs and other greenery fresh by wrapping in a clean, damp tea towel or between layers of paper towelling, and storing in an airtight container or plastic bag in the fridge.
• When storing half-used capsicums leave in the membrane and seeds as this helps to prolong their life. Also works for avocadoes.
